Ask the Expert: How does the OILCHECK oil analyzer work?

The OilCheck TMEH 1 measures the effects of contamination and electro-chemical changes that occur in synthetic and petroleum based oils. It is especially developed for engine oils, but is also suitable for gear and lubrication oils.

The OilCheck is a portable instrument which offers a two minute alternative to lengthy laboratory investigations. at severe changes from a linear degradation of the oil, more sophisticated analysis is still recommended.

The OilCheck detects and measures the dielectric constant of an oil. By comparing the measurements obtained from used and unused oils of the same brand, the instrument is able to determine the degree of change in the oil's dielectric constant. Dielectric change is directly related to the degradation and contamination level of the oil. It is primarily used to help extend oil change intervals and to detect increased mechanical wear. If you have a laboratory program, it is an excellent screening tool to determine which samples should be sent to the lab for detailed analysis.

To facilitate trending, the instrument is equipped with a numerical readout. Occurrences of water, anti-freeze, metal particles would all have an instant influence of the dielectric change. Oxidation or build-up of acids would have a more moderate influence of the dielectric constant as would fuel soot, sludge, dirt and petrol/diesel fuel.

The TMEH 1 is used extensively by the US Military branches to increase oil drain intervals of their vehicle fleets.
