The Expert: Importance
Professional Lubrication Storage & Dispensing Systems
|
|
Maintenance professionals are now taking a
proactive approach to the storage, handling and dispensing of all types of
oils. Lubricants must be considered as an expensive asset, that must be
carefully managed if they are to provide the necessary protection for
today's complex machinery. Consequently, many past practices in the way
lubricants are stored, handled and dispensed in the work place need to
change to ensure maximum cleanliness.
Another aspect of modern industry, is our
acute awareness of environmental, health, and safety issues. The impact of
pollution cannot be understated.
Almost all lubricants place particular
demands on plant, machinery, equipment, and lubricant techniques. Oil is
frequently topped up or replaced on site under the harshest conditions and
where the potential for contamination from dust, dirt, and water is the
greatest. Use of traditional open topped containers such as metal oil cans,
jugs, buckets, etc. can afford little or no protection to the lubricant from
air borne contaminants. This can lead to a significant amount of lubricant
contamination in mechanical systems throughout a plant.
Progressive
companies are changing to dedicated containers such as the Oil
Safe®
lubricant dispenser bottles. The bottles should be designated for use with a
given product and labeled accordingly. Utilizing dedicated lube carts for
designated areas of a plant is also useful. Create a color coding system
that uses words, images and color to define the specific product for a given
application. Once identified, the products are then matched with the correct
storage and transfer container. The result is a visual system that clearly
communicates which lubricant the machine requires, and which container held
that particular lubricant.
