New Product Additions

The Examiner 1000 is a hand-held, battery-powered overall vibration meter. It is the perfect tool for trending overall vibration readings in process equipment such as : Rolling element bearings, Motors AC/DC, Pumps, Gearboxes, Compressors and Fans.

VISGAGE checks oil viscosity on-site; without thermometers or stop watches. The VISGAGE can be used to check any oil from a light spindle oil to heavy gear oils.

The HA-2 complete REACT Shaft Alignment System is the most cost-effective and efficient machinery alignment system available anywhere. The REACT System combines the most versatile and sturdy stainless steel hardware in the industry . You can perform both the "Rim/Face" method as well as the "Reverse Indicator" method with the same hardware. The system accommodates shafts from 1/2" to 9-1/2" and includes all the necessary hardware, clamps, chains, etc. all packed in a sturdy aluminum carrying case

Ask the Expert:  Wolf Campbell, P.E. - SKF Services
Question: "How can acoustic analysis be useful in my maintenance program?"

Answer:  Acoustic analysis has many uses in a PdM program. It has been an element, along with more “traditional” vibration measurements such as velocity and acceleration readings, in determining machine bearing condition. The most dramatic and immediately gratifying use of acoustic analysis in locating pneumatic and steam leaks. The traditional approach for pneumatic leakage location has been the “Souper Snooper” soapy water solution approach. This is effective, but highly manpower intensive and can be quite messy and slippery. Acoustic signals are generated by these leaks and a hand held device can be used to quickly locate leaks without using solutions. This leakage location method can even locate leaks found among other audible sources. It will seem amazing to find a leaking tubing that is surrounded by very loud machines. This tool can eliminate an entire crew of technicians.

Application Note: Ultrasonic Inspection

Air Leaks: Do your compressors run when your plant is unmanned? Do you have difficulty maintaining optimum pressure? Do you rely on your backup compressor to meet routine demand? Save thousands in energy cost by repairing air leaks. Ultrasound is the easiest way to find them, especially with the Accutrak VPE-1000.

Steam Traps & Valves:  Leaking steam traps are tremendously inefficient. Bad steam traps are surprisingly common, roughly 30% of the traps in a plant with no trap testing program will be leaking! Use a contact probe to hear the internal flow through steam traps and valves.

Bearings: Using Ultrasound to identify bearing wear in its early stages can be a valuable tool in avoiding costly downtime. As internal components in moving machinery begin to wear, increased  friction creates subtle changes in the ultrasonic sound being generated. These changes in ultrasound present themselves before other signs like heat or vibration are noticeable.

What's Hot? (...and less than $1,000.00)

The AccuTrak® VPE-1000 Ultrasonic Inspection system is extremely sensitive to the ultrasonic sound of leaks and friction in industrial systems. So sensitive the VPE-1000 can hear the blink of an eye, yet most background noise will not interfere with detection accuracy. Use the VPE-1000 for a variety of leak detection and plant maintenance applications such as : Steam Traps, Bearing Wear, Valve Testing and Air, Vacuum, Refrigerant and Gas leaks.

The Monarch Pocket-Tach Plus Kit is a 3 button, 30 function contact/non-contact digital tachometer, totalizer/counter and timer (stop watch). It will measure RPM and English/Metric linear speed.

The CMCP1000 is a dual limit, single channel Vibration Monitor with an integral accelerometer packaged in an explosion-proof housing suitable for NEC Division I hazardous areas. Designed to comply with API670 standards, the CMCP1000 far exceeds the capabilities of competitive vibration switches. The unit also provides a buffered transducer output for detailed diagnostics. The CMCP1000 a local display in terms of velocity with a full scale range of 0 to 1.0 in/sec.

Dare to Compare:    RDI vs. CTC Vibration Transmitters
Vibration Transmitters are gaining usage. Here is a comparison of two popular transmitters. A review indicates that the CMCP500 series transmitter offers a better quality , lower cost product that draws less current, and provides higher accuracy.

Case History:
A mid-west Utility wanted to upgrade their obsolete IRD continuous monitoring system on their Boiler Feed Pumps. In lieu of a traditional rack mounted supervisory system, we provided a modular, distributed approach utilizing CMCP500 series transmitters and monitors, which significantly lowered both the component and installation cost for the project. Eddy Probes were used to replace Shaft Riders for radial vibration and were also installed for axial position measurements. If you have an outdated rack mount system, give us a call to discuss how we can assist you in providing a cost effective distributed monitoring system at a fraction of the cost of traditional monitors.
Holiday Schedule:

Trivia Contest

Many Thanks to all of you who participated in last issues' Trivia Contest.  With about 100 correct answers from participants, the names were placed into a hat and our accountant, Natalie Henderson, drew the winning name. Larry Wright of M&M Mars was awarded a $50.00 gift certificate that may be redeemed at any member of the Pappa's Restaurant Chain.
